Karen Dietrich (Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA) is a digital artist, illustrator and graphic designer who lives and works in Spain.
A graduate of La Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico, Dietrich has exhibited in the United States, the Caribbean, and Europe. She has also created cover art, illustrations, and graphic designs for a wide range of clients in the United States, Puerto Rico, Ireland and Spain.
Dietrich's work is characterized by dreamscapes, mindscapes, thoughts and emotions interpreted and enhanced in terms of mythology and oneiric imagery. As a socially aware artist, Dietrich has developed an artistic identity and language which allows her to express and link social statements with an exploration of emotional landscapes.
Dietrich is inspired by symbolism and its use of suggestion to express mystical concepts, emotions, and states of mind. She is also inspired by the visual artist Leonora Carrington, whose work focused on magical realism, using autobiographical detail and symbols as the subjects of her paintings.
She is connected to the contemporary critical dialog of her medium through the ideas of John Berger.
